Rear ladder fitted.

The 2012 model Kontiki did not come with a ladder fitted a standard, but so typical of me, I was soon missing this accessory, previously fitted as standard to the other motorhomes I have owned. I never thought to order this as a factory fit opton when placing the order for the ‘van, but on our trip to Rome in November, it was clear that this was a mistake…

Primarily, the ladder is used to gain access to the roof, so this makes the daunting task of cleaning the roof a lot easier but also allows access to the satellite dish and for those wishing to carry items on the roof, this task too is facilitated.

The new ladder in the locked, upright position.

We do have one other use for our ladder when away on tour though…….laundry! Either a line fastened from the ladder to a nearby tree or, our folding clothes airer clipped over the ladder! I like the folding clothes airer as a place to drop the towels etc but am not so keen on the airer being clipped onto the motorhome through an open window!

Camping and Caravanning Club Sheriff Hutton

A winter refurbishment at the Camping and Caravanning Club Sheriff Hutton

It’s just over five months since my last visit to the Camping and Caravanning Club Sheriff Hutton and in that time, there have been many changes. The majority of roads on site are now resurfaced, numerous new hard standing pitches have appeared, refurbished water/waste points, electronic barriers and perhaps, most importantly of all, a fully refurbished toilet and shower block. New… Continue reading

The first taste of winter….

February 4th 2012 brought the first real taste of winter – snow, snow and more snow! Unfortunately, I think it is the wrong type of snow – it’s no good for snow balling and not very good at making snow people either!

Icicles

Melting snow caused icicles to form along the bodywork.

Extractor vent cover

Many motorhomes and caravans are fitted with an extractor fan above the cooker. Whilst this can be very useful in it’s own right, it may come with a slight drawback. During times of very windy weather, cold winds may enter the unit via the extractor fan. Generally speaking, there is no issue, but during our night stop at Dunkerque ferry terminal in November,  in the high winds…..the opposite was true… Continue reading

External radio aerial – improving motorhome radio reception

Improving motorhome radio reception

This one is often a puzzle for many a motorhomer – radio reception. The very design of the motorhome, often with the Luton bunk above the driving cab may well be the cause of some of the issues affecting motorhome radio reception.  Some motorhomes have no problem with radio reception, others seem to be cursed. I have to admit that my previous Compass Avantgarde and then… Continue reading

Breath test kits in France – legally required?

Breath test kits in France

There have been numerous reports in the press recently that breath test kits must be carried in vehicles in France. It seems a little unclear at the present time whether this applies to French registered vehicles or indeed all vehicles passing through the country. However, as breath test kits are small in size and light weight, I decided to purchase some, “just in case”.

Dometic B2200 air conditioning

Another accessory – Dometic B2200 roof mounted air conditioning

When ordering the 2012 Swift Kon-tiki 679, I did not place an order for the Dometic B2200 roof mounted airconditioning system. Instead, I had decided to wait and see how motorhome touring overseas was, without the air con system. Anyway, and as usual, I changed my mind and last week had a few modifications done to the Kon-tiki, with the Dometic B2200 system… Continue reading

AA Road Atlas Italy

AA Road Atlas Italy

Decent roads maps of Italy are not the easiest of things to come by. My previous map of Italy – bought in Italy, I hasten to add – had just about fallen to pieces so the time had come to obtain a replacement. The AA Road Atlas Italy is a low cost choice but appears to do what it says on the tin

Well stone me!

When one thing leads to another…

I had arranged to take the motorhome for some warranty work, a few bits here and there. The Fiat onboard computer suggested my average speed over the last 3000 miles was 4 mph and I was also having some issues with the CD player and the radio reception. I have requested that an external aerial be fitted as “best practice”. My three previous Kontikis… Continue reading
